Yoga with Awareness

Ken Eyerman has more than 30 years experience with Yoga & Bodywork. He is a trained practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method and is author of 'Massage'.

He will bring his wealth of learning to this week’s unique blend of dynamic flowing yoga with gentle inner sensing Feldenkrais movement awareness lessons. Ken's intuitive and spontaneous, hands-on approach places an emphasis on using the breath, an awareness of your inner process and how to use your body efficiently. This combination of approaches will ease you into the postures and classes are suitable for all levels of experience, including those who have injuries or are restricted in their movement.

Ken’s main Yoga influences are Derek Ireland, and Angela Farmer. Ken has developed his own style of teaching, bridging the space between the dynamic power of Astanga and the gentle understated, spiralling Feldenkrais movements. We will start off by going within and calming the mind with meditation, affirmation and breath work in order to shift our awareness to where we are in the moment and then move into fun, flowing asana sequences, to recharge and purify the body and mind.

Afternoon sessions will be restorative and inquisitive, revealing a completely different way to approach the asanas, playing with gravity, creating the conditions for the body to "undo".

Nancy has studied with Jenny Beeken of The Inner Yoga Trust for over twenty five years, and has been teaching for over 20 years, as well as leading several successful retreats at Huzur Vadisi.

Inner Yoga is movement from the core of our being. The body has the intelligence to know how it needs to move. The classical yoga postures, the asanas, originally developed from this intelligence. The structure developed for the asanas is known as Hatha Yoga. Inner Yoga takes these classical asanas, together with the philosophy of yoga and its spiritual aspects, and teaches them in a way that can transform the body, mind and emotions, touching the heart of our being.

This teaching asks you to be open, to experiment, to practice, and to take yoga into your life. When yoga is taken in this spirit it brings you the ability to remedy all sorts of imbalances in the body, mind and spirit. Ours is not a Yoga of regimented shapes, more an encouragement of each individual on a journey towards movement and vitality.

Jan has been practicing yoga for 43 years and teaching for 18. She studied with John Davies for her British Wheel of Yoga qualification and Paul Harvey for aYs (formerly Viniyoga). She is the Chair of the Southampton Yoga Association. Jan’s yoga teaching is a combination of several traditions and her long experience. Yoga with Audrey Tom and Fiona Harding

Audrey has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and teaching for 10 years. She holds a diploma from the British Wheel of Yoga and the Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation in Chennai, India, where yoga ( harmony of mind, body and breath ) is used as a tool in healing / therapy. She is also influenced by the work of Vanda Scaravelli.

As a qualified reflexologist and Thai Yoga massage therapist her work is also enriched by these traditions. With the therapeutic aspect of the Krishnamacharya tradition, (which was usually taught one to one, tailor made for each individual's needs,) and the release based Scaravelli influence, her classes focus on helping to undo deep seated tension so that the heart of one's strength is regained thus freeing the body and breath and as a result the mind becomes more focused and clear, regaining a sense of vitality, joy and lightness.

Fiona has been practicing yoga for 22 years and teaching for 8 years. She has her diploma through Yoga Academy with Simon Low, which is recognized by the British Wheel of Yoga. She has also studied and trained in Anusara yoga, as well as regularly attending workshops and courses with leading international teachers. Her teaching style is inspired by the work of TKV Desikachar, BKS Iyengar and Vanda Scaravelli. Fiona's classes focus on a moving meditation with some dynamic postures, allowing the body to feel energized yet relaxed, the mind alert while still, and with awareness on the breath to be calm yet fluid. Allowing body, mind and breath to become one, through the practice of pranayama, asana and relaxation.

This week will be a great opportunity to benefit from the combination of their skills and approaches to yoga. There will be two 1.5 hr sessions, 8am and 5pm, with either Audrey or Fiona assisting, depending on who is teaching.

Sivananda Yoga with Vicky Holmstock - £545

Vicky's yoga journey started aged 13 with lessons at secondary school. Later she continued yoga classes to complement dance training, and eventually to assist recovery from a back injury. She continued to attend yoga classes all the world over, and in 2003 enrolled to study yoga on the six month course at Sivananda Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas, completing her 200 hour yoga alliance certified teacher training. Over the last six years she has continued to learn and grow through her teaching, her own practice and attending courses and workshops.

Vicky is also a qualified personal trainer and teaches a range of group exercise classes including swiss ball, circuit training, aerobics, body conditioning and weights classes. She is a member of the register of exercise professionals and is committed to their vision of providing only the highest standard of coaching.

Vicky set up and runs Yellow Yoga to offer the benefits of yoga to a wide range of classes to all levels of ability in the community. Vicky will lead two sessions daily 7:30am - 9:00am and 5:30 - 7:00 on the yoga shala.

Transformation Hatha Yoga for Beginners with Jane Worrall - £545

While most yoga classes are suitable for all levels, if you are one of the many people who ask us about yoga for beginners, you might like to take your first steps into yoga practice in the company of others who are also at the beginning of their yoga journey. This course will be a gentle and enjoyable introduction to the benefits of yoga. Jane is one of the founders of Huzur Vadisi and has been practising yoga for nearly thirty years. She is also trained as a teacher of Transformation Hatha Yoga which focuses on helping each yoga student to a deeper understanding of mind, body and spirit, and to develop their own intuition about promoting health, vitality, creativity and happiness. In her personal practice she focuses on gentle stretching, asanas (poses), breathing and posture to release the body's natural energy flow. This natural calming and yet energising flow is one of the main benefits of a yoga practice, creating a sense of relaxed well-being, which promotes health and ease for mind, body and spirit, and can be used as a preparation for meditation.

The week will be relaxed, enjoyable, transformational and fun. Jane's warm personality and good communication skills have helped to make Huzur Vadisi a place people return to year after year, and will help you to get the most from your yoga holiday.

Mindfulness Week: Meditation with gentle Yoga with Kirsten Tofahrn

In this week Kirsten will guide you gently into being more in the present moment. Mindfulness means to observe the moment with all senses and without judgment, fresh and friendly. In morning and afternoon sessions you will get to know different meditation techniques that will support this process. Through gentle exercises and yoga, body awareness techniques, silent and guided Meditations and personal inquiries we will create a space that allows you to relax more deeply. There will be times of coming together and sharing experiences as well as times in silence. On some evenings there will be the opportunity to spend creative time together.

Taking time to enjoy the beautiful nature or to just “do nothing” is an essential part of this Mindful holiday week.

Kirsten has been conducting meditation and therapy groups and classes for more than 20 years. She is a certified mindfulness teacher and Psychological healing practitioner, educated in many different meditation techniques and therapeutic methods. A combination of lightness and depth is her unique quality that many of her participants valued already. During this week she will be available for individual sessions also.

Jivamukti Yoga is a method of yoga that was created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984, which reintegrates the physical, philosophical and spiritual aspects of Yoga. The emphasis in the west has been on Yoga as mostly a physical practice. More and more people are achieving firmer bodies through regular yoga classes. But many are finding something more: what starts out as a purely physical practice creeps into the hearts and minds of even the least spiritual practitioners.

Jivamukti Yoga offers vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating yoga classes. Classes include Vinyasa (flowing asana sequences), hands-on adjustments, Pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, Sanskrit chanting, Yogic philosophical teachings and deep relaxation. To keep the practice inspiring, asana sequences are ever-changing. with music playing an integral role in the class.

Anja is a Certified Advanced Jivamukti Teacher and director of Jivamukti Berlin. She began her studies with Jivamukti in New York in 2000 with Jivamukti founders David Life and Sharon Gannon.

Dechen is a certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher, having been introduced to Jivamukti at the age of 19. He is also an accomplished actor, brother to Uma Thurman. Their father is Robert A.F. Thurman, Jey Tsong Khapa scholar of Indo-Tibetan Studies at Columbia University, the first westerner to be accepted into the Tibetan Monastic community. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism.

Bikram Yoga is a system developed by Bikram Chaudhury, described as ‘the best yogi of the 20th century’ by Swami Shivananda. It is a fun and challenging series of 26 postures, which are normally practiced in a hot room - at Huzur Vadisi the August weather will supply the necessary heat which allows muscles, ligaments and joints to perform at their optimum, and allows deep changes and healing to take place. It also promotes sweating to flush toxins from the body. The class is suitable for all levels from beginners to advanced, as each student works to their own level, and is aided by the famous Bikram ‘posture clinics’ in which students are guided individually to deepen their practice, or to heal particular injuries.

Michele came to Bikram Yoga when, as a martial arts instructor living in Los Angeles, she seriously injured her knee. She was so impressed by her recovery using the method that she went on to study with Bikram Choudhury himself for four years, and has been teaching for nine years. Michele has opened the first three Bikram centres in London. This is her ninth year at Huzur Vadisi.

Morning sessions begin with guided meditation at 7.30, followed by pranayama, moving into hatha flow asana focusing on standing postures, forward bends, twists and balancings, with surya namaskar variations, according to ability.

Afternoon sessions at 4.30-6.30 with inverted postures and backbends, a short session of pranayama, closing the day with meditation. There will also be a dancing meditation at least twice within the week.

All sessions are optional (it is, after all, your holiday) but it goes without saying that the more you participate the better and more joyful you will feel.

This will be a glorious time for slow and gentle explorations of the body, mind and spirit, focusing on gently awakening our physical awareness. Together we will delve into elements of Vanda Scaravelli’s teachings, including breath, and the flow of gravity, working to reveal and release the natural freedom of the body, particularly the spine. This approach to yoga gradually enables us to reveal long-held patterns, helping us find a new lightness and suppleness that extends beyond the mat, and into our everyday movements.

We will also be joined by Robert Annis, a very talented and intuitive massage therapist, who will be on hand to soothe aching muscles and help everyone to simply wind down, and enjoy the simplicity and beauty of this lovely space.

Catherine is well known for her imaginative and practical approach to yoga. She was originally a professional dancer and has been practicing yoga for over 25 years. The daily schedule consists of a morning walk and meditation, followed by two yoga practices, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lisa Powell has been a practicing yoga teacher and sports massage therapist since 2000. She began her training at the Sivananda Ashram in India and deepened her knowledge of yoga and the human body by completing the 2-year Yoga Therapy Diploma in London. Lisa is a fully qualified Pregnancy Yoga Teacher and a Relax & Renew Restorative Yoga Teacher.

Lisa will integrate her knowledge of yoga, relaxation, breathing, writing, chanting and visualisation to help relieve physical and mental tension, release emotional blocks and bring back a sense of connection to the Self.

The morning yoga session will include dynamic postures to warm and invigorate the body and mind, pranayama (breathing exercises) to cleanse the lungs and increase the vital energy of the body and deep relaxation to release tension and stress. Hilary Menting-Brown, E-RYT 500 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher), is the founder of Yoga Moves, which she opened in Utrecht, The Netherlands in the summer of 2001. A native Californian, Hilary has studied and practiced many forms of yoga, healing arts, massage & bodywork and dance since the early 1980's. Her style is deep and playful, honest and intense. Her classes are always fresh and new, following the seasons, the climate and the mood of her students, yet the basis is always grounded in deep alignment and form. Hilary teaches primarily a deep and conscious style of Vinyasa Based Yoga - a fluid but precise, dynamic yet relaxed method that incorporates the breath as a focus of moving meditation.

Hilary has been practicing yoga for over 30 years, and in the past 10 years her hobby became her work and passion. She holds teacher certificates in Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (It's Yoga) & Shiva Reas Prana-Vinyasa style of yoga, and has studied with numerous unknown and well-known teachers! Five Day Yoga with Fenella Lindsell

Fenella has been teaching yoga for 20 years, inspired initially by an Iyengar Teacher in India and then on her return to London by Kay Fowler who trained with the British Wheel of Yoga and teaches in Chelsea. She trained with The British Wheel of Yoga and went on to study with Iyengar teachers for many years.

She has taught pre and post natal yoga and took part in a major research project at Queen Charlotte's Hospital in West London. Fenella enjoys teaching all age groups, her style is a dynamic flow that incorporates the importance of alignment, the flow of Astanga and the fun of Jivamukti yoga. All postures can be adapted to meet the ability of those taking part so whether you are beginner or a more advanced yogi, you would be most welcome to join.

This retreat is five days, rather than the usual seven, and follows the itinerary below:-

Wednesday 10th October: Arrive and spend the day at leisure.
